Technology Etiquette Summary Post

Everyone uses technology in their daily lives, whether it be a spoon you’re eating with or a smart fridge that you’re using. Since technology is evolving so much etiquette online is really important.

There are many unspoken guidelines we need to follow online and since technology is a large part of many people’s lives we need to follow these ‘rules’. Most of these rules are common sense but many people don’t follow them. They forget about common courtesy whenever they log on online. When someone holds the door open for you it’s not necessary to say thank you but many people do.

The use of technology has led to people recognizing that certain actions can be considered rude. People can be irritated by loud conversation in public spaces. It’s not safe to look at your device while crossing the road as if you are distracted and the driver of the car is not expecting you to not be paying attention it can lead to an accident. As I previously said in a blog post before (Angad’s Post for technology etiquette assignment, 2022), “ Society would be a lot better if there were rules that people should follow about technology usage. More and more people are gaining access to technologies, and it is annoying when people are constantly on their devices in public spaces. There could be rules about this, so people would follow proper netiquette more often.”

In some sense, technology usage and socially acceptable behaviour go hand in hand. With the usage of technology, it may create a new standard that guides how to act in a certain way. Before the internet became so popular, social etiquette was a major concern. Quite a few people were born at the time the internet was rapidly gaining popularity. They have grown up using technology. It is possible to teach people how to be socially acceptable with the help of technology. Technology guides socially acceptable behaviour by teaching people necessary netiquette.

Some problems that arise from technology could be that people can get too dependent on it and not do things themselves. Many people also do bad things online for attention. An example would be the slap your teacher trend that was popular on TikTok. Teenagers were running around and assaulting their teachers because it was a trend that was gaining popularity.

Whenever there’s a power outage I get immensely bored as technology is my main source of entertainment. I read books but most of them are online now as it’s way easier to access. As technology is becoming more common, if a power outage happens that can be catastrophic for anyone using it. If we make robots in the future to assist humans then many people will lose valuable life skills. We can end up like the people in Wall-E. They are mindless people that basically exist online. I hope humanity doesn’t end up like that in the future.

What I would teach my peers about netiquette is how etiquette differs online and in real life, how what we say online affects others, when it is appropriate to use technology, and

which tone to use when you’re talking to others. They especially have to be aware when it’s appropriate to use technology. Many of my peers will look at their phones if the conversation at hand gets slightly awkward. I sometimes also do this as I need something to break the silence. I think that normal and internet etiquette should be taught in school. There are many people who loose job opportunities when they post something dumb and their employers find out about it, causing them to not get the job.

People cyberbully for many reasons. People cyberbully for fun, as Tyler Edmonds, the cyberbully of Ashley Lovelace, did for fun. Cyberbullying can result in mental damage which is said to be worse than physical injury by some people.

Ashley Lovelace was an American social media celebrity who started to rise to fame because of her Instagram account. She was interested in fashion and singing so she joined Instagram to gain popularity. She posted short videos of herself singing. She gained a lot of followers, but also a lot of haters. Tyler was one of those haters and (TheNetLine, 2020) “After her death, fans called out Tyler for his irresponsible actions, but Instead of expressing remorse, Tyler seemed to delight in his actions. When asked why he bullied Ashley so much, Tyler nonchalantly stated that he did it because he was bored.” Tyler constantly receives criticism but (TheNetline, 2020) “he seems to revel in it.

Some rules that I would add to the school would be to not be on your phones in the halls when many people need to pass through. It’s really annoying to access my locker after a class because the grade 8s and 9s are playing Clash Royale and Brawl Stars. It would be fine if they were on the sides but they aren’t. People need to lower their volume when listening to music as sometimes I can hear it from several desks away and it disturbs me a lot.

The fact that it takes so little time to send a text message makes many people think it’s no big deal to text while driving, yet it’s highly dangerous especially when travelling at high speeds. Distracted driving is defined as (Canadadrives, 2022), “when any distraction affects your judgement and prevents you from driving safely. According to (CanadaDrives, 2022) 80% of collisions involve some form of driver inattention. 1.6 million car crashes happen annually. Using electronic devices while driving can cost you around $350.

I would tell a younger sibling or friend on how to protect their privacy online. I would tell them not to use their real names or give out any personal information. I would also tell them not to give anyone they meet online their parent’s credit card number out. I would explain to them what to do if they come across someone that makes them feel uncomfortable. They should also know that most things you post online are permanent so they should really think about what they post. The main thing I would share is to not trust everything you see online and instead research about it. I’ll tell them to not friend everyone online and only friend people they know in real life. I would teach them a bit about netiquette as it’s best to learn early and to develop good habits.

I think the most important thing we learned about is netiquette. I think that cyberbullying and communication etiquette fall under netiquette. Everyone has good netiquette, then cyberbullying wouldn’t happen. Improper netiquette is what leads to online bullying.

If I were to educate my peers on this I would lead them to this website.
